Scale up and Scale out in Kubernetes

Overview

Both Scale UP and Scale OUT are lightweight operations in AKS Clusters – as opposed to VM Scale Up or Scale OUT

Scaling Up

Scaling up, is simply a matter of allocating more cluster resources to each pod.

This is in stark contrast to VM scale up – which requires shut down and restart of instances

Scaling Out

Pods can be automatically scaled out using the horizontal pod autoscaler.

Cluster nodes (VMs) can also be autoscaled.
